The collection is arranged in chronological order. The records in this collection are primarily presentation documents of design reviews and quarterly reports for the Titan Mars 73 mission. Among the documents included in the collection is a detailed description of Mars orbit determination programming development [Flds 1-2]. The Mars Scientific Model, [Flds 3-6], had the latest and most accurate data for Mars spaceflight program needs. Members of the Lunar and Planetary Science Section of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory prepared it. It contained Mars orbital and physical data, along with interior, surface, atmospheric data, and observational phenomena. Folders 15-17 contain the January 1970 Quarterly Review, held during the month that the mission was rescheduled and renamed. This review contains details of the spacecraft's development and changes thereto, such as resizing of the solar panels. There are also other presentation materials that provide details of the spacecraft development, as well as two Division 29 status reviews. Finally, in Folder 21 there is a study report on the Mars Orbiting Scientific Station (MOSS) prepared in 1972 by the Mariner Mars 1971 Project Staff. Most of the documents contain at least one identifying number, usually a Viking Orbiter Data Index number. These are usually written in pencil in the lower right or left hand corner of the first page of each document. The Archives has a nine-volume printout of Viking documents listed by Data Index number. The listing of index numbers, although in ascending sequential order, is discontinuous. Number series are repeated several times throughout the index.
